Burythorpe Sports Centre

The Burythorpe Sports Centre exists to provide facilities for the sporting and recreational needs of the village and surrounding parish and to promote the use of these facilities to the fullest extent.

The Burythorpe Sports Centre is managed by a committee who also appoint trustees who oversee the property of the Sports Centre - essentially the sports field and pavilion.  The Sports Centre was set up back in the 1970's and has supported the development of village cricket and football teams as well as maintaining the field for general use.

In recent years, we have held archery sessions, enjoyed rounders matches, played football and continued Burythorpe's long and proud tradition of league cricket.  Every summer, we hold a Village Fun Day, a family day of sports and fun on the field, with races for all ages, school 5 a side football and refreshment stalls.  This year's Fun Day is Sunday 13th July.

The Sports Centre welcomes new input and we are always looking for new members to join our very active committee, which meets on a roughly monthly basis in the congenial atmosphere of the Bay Horse.  if you wish to discuss joining the committee, please talk with any committee member or call David Quick on 658057.  Our current committee is as follows:

Eamonn Wall - Chairman, David Quick - Secretary, Jean Benton - Treasurer

Neil Johnson, Sandra Wall, Simon Hunter, Simon Tootell, Kieran Wall, Dean Tyreman, Mary Harris, John Webster, Rose Webster, Pam Abbott, Kevin Benton

The next Meeting of the Burythorpe Sports Centre will be:

Past Events

Star Party

Despite a cloudy evening the party was a great success!  With over forty people attending, John Harper took us on a guided tour of the Universe via his laptop.  We did start off outside though with Ursa Major and Cassiopia making a brief appearance.  A lucky few even managed a glimpse of the moon through a telescope.

Some will be interested to know that a couple of pieces of software used during the evening are available for free.  Stellarium is Open Source Software and available from www.stellarium.org, and WinStars which is Freeware and can be downloaded from www.winstars.net/english/index.html.  Star Strider from www.starstrider.com can be downloaded as a demo version with limited functionality, but can be bought for under 50.  John also provided copies of star maps which you too can download from www.skymaps.com.

We must also thank Nick and Mel, two other members of the Scarborough and Ryedale Atronomical Society for bringing telescopes and general assistance.

Thanks to Mary and Rose for chocolate cake and biscuits and thanks to Sandra and Jean for running the refreshments.

Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society will be holding their next public viewing at Dalby Forest on the 7th November.  I thoroughly recommend these events.  For more information visit:

Burythorpe Y.C.A. was founded in 1983 and is still going strong and we look forward to our 25th Anniversary in 2008.  We manage to keep a fairly constant number of members around 15 and meet once a month on the second Thursday, mainly at the Church Hall.

The AGM is held in April when it is decided on the coming year's speakers and events.  These include this year a speaker on Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Air Ambulance, nearer Christmas there will be a chance to make a Christmas decoration and we will be visiting the Beck Isle Museum in Pickering, as well as our October dinner.

In December we have a Christmas party in a member's house and January we enjoy a pie and peas supper at another member's house.  Please come and join us.  For further information please contact the secretary, Mrs. Pam Abbott on 01653 658394.
